Designed as part of James Craig's New Town plan in 1767, during the reign of the Hanovarian monarch King George III and the streets names reflect this period in history in celebration of the union of the Crowns. Rose and Thistle Street were named after the Emblems of Scotland (the Thistle) and England (the Rose).

Rose Street was built in 1781 as a secondary street running east to west from St Andrew Square to Charlotte Square on the south side of George Street. Originally used as a service entrance to the grand residential homes on Princes Street and George Street, the street became the hub of artisans of the New Town. By the mid 1800s, Rose Street had established itself as a drinking oasis and became nicknamed the "Amber Mile" - this reputation is proudly upheld today.

In the 1950s and 60s Rose Street became well-known as the haunt of a new wave of Scottish poets. Writers such as Hugh MacDiarmid and Robert Garioch gathered with their friends for lively debate. They often wrote in Scots or Gaelic to revive a distinctly Scottish literary style. Today Rose Street is fully pedestrianised, and the pavements are decorated with eight different mosaic roses.
